Full operation of neutral gas protected Electro Slag Remelting process at Esfarayen Industrial Complex (EICO)

Full operation of neutral gas protected Electro Slag Remelting process at Esfarayen Industrial Complex (EICO)
ElectroSlag Remelting (ESR) under neutral protective gas at Esfarayen Industrial Complex is now fully operational.

ElectroSlag Remelting (ESR) under neutral protective gas at Esfarayen Industrial Complex is now fully operational. The ESR has been added to the production line from Sept. 2017. This unique instrument, in Iran and the whole Middle East region, was brought to the production line as one of the developmental plan of EICO’s research and development vision. The facility enables EICO to annually produce about 6000 Tons of different ESR high quality alloyed steels such as cold and hot work tool steels, mold steel, steel for bearings, stainless steel (austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, Duplex, precipitation hardening) etc.

The high quality alloyed steels produced by EICO’s ESR can be used in industries such as Oil, Gas & Petrochemical, power plants, steel, automotive, etc.

EICO’s ESR can be operated under neutral gases (Argon, Nitrogen). The protective neutral gas impacts the quality of the products as follows:

1.      No Or very small hydrogen pick-Up in steel During ESR (less than 0.5 ppm)

2.      Extra low oxygen levels attainable (<10ppm) with usual ternary slags.

3.      Achieving excellent micro cleanliness and improved mechanical (toughness) properties.

4.      Prevention of oxidation of active elements such as Al, Ti, Zr in special Alloys.

5.      Maintenance of very low nitrogen levels and no nitrogen pick-up.

6.      Preventing sulfur lost in free cutting steels under neutral gas shield by using acidic slag saturated with sulfur.

7.      Improvement in compositional & microstructural homogeneity and product quality compared with the process under atmospheric condition.

The ESR at Esfarayen Industrial Complex is capable of producing ingots with the diameter from 450 mm to 1200 mm, length up to 6 m, and maximum weight of 52 Tons. These ingots are then used in different sections of EICO as an input to produce final products (based on costumer requirements) with open die forging, radial forgings, and high precision machining instruments.

It is worth mentioning that the ESR products, in addition to nourishing the needs of Iran’s internal market, can be exported internationally as well.
